Breaking the fifth wall: Tchaiko Omawale of 'Solace' talks about her filmmaking process on Directing Magic
So excited that filmmaker Marquette Jones hosted Tchaiko Omawale on her Directing Magic podcast! Omawale just debuted her feature film Solace at the Los Angeles Film Festival. Solace follows a teenaged girl who is sent to live with her grandmother and develops an eating disorder to cope. The film confronts body dysmorphia, trauma, and black girlhood and stars Hope Olaidé Wilson, Lynn Whitfield and Glynn Turman.
Omawale talks about breaking the “fifth wall”, that is putting her own personal experiences with recovery into the film, which led to taking an experimental, sometimes nonlinear approach to the narrative.
“The only way through is stripping everything away and getting vulnerable.”
