Amandine Gay works between France and Canada as a filmmaker, an afrofeminist activist, and a scholar. Her first feature length documentary Speak Up, about Black women's lives in France and Belgium, was self-produced, self-distributed and released in 2017 in four countries: France, Switzerland, Belgium and Canada. The New-Yorker dubbed it " both a vital film in itself and a virtual kit for the inspiration of other filmmakers; it’s an opening of voices and of paths." Her second-feature length documentary, A Story of One's Own, is currently in production and will tackle transnational adoption.
